I treated one of the pastors who is a movie buff to the screening for his upcoming birthday since hubby wasn't the least bit interested. I counted 19
people in the theatre including us but the showing was late afternoon Friday so some people may not have been off work yet. Most of the folks were around my
age although one couple had two teenagers with them and a quite elderly gentleman came in a few minutes late (not sure if he was just late or if he skipped out
of another movie). No one walked out but there also didn't seem to be much reaction to any of it.
Honestly, this is one of the better Gerry movies I've seen (haven't seen many so don't get excited). It wasn't terrible but not so close to great either. Without giving away spoilers, the beginning is miles better than the quite anti-climatic ending. There is very little in the way of character development beyond 'good' or 'bad' which gets murky toward the middle; they're all one dimensional. I had difficulty deciding who to root for and by the end, didn't really care one way or the other. Plot is pretty much standard revenge fare and there were several instances that made little to no sense at all because of the thinly sketched back-stories. A few times something occurred that was so implausible as to be obviously inserted just for storyline progression. The look of everything is dark and bleak. Supposed to be that way I'm sure because it is a dark, bleak subject but after a while, it becomes overbearing. Nothing new or notable that hasn't been done before or better. A few scenes really stand out (pretty much the trailer clips) but don't stand alone and once the ending got rolling, I pretty much lost interest. As usual, Gerry's attempts at any accent other than the one he was born with are laughable - it's just not his bag, baby. He looks BANGIN' HOT though (had I been the director, I would've changed the script to make him mute). For some reason, his character evoked little sympathy in me which I'm thinking it was supposed to on some level. Not sure if it was how Gerry played it or something flawed in the script. I found myself not really giving a damn one way or the other about any of the characters. Jamie Foxx totally called in his performance. I'm not a huge fan of his acting other than his turn as Ray Charles and only because he completely morphed into the guy which to me is impressive. He goes around with either a pained (as in constipated) or perplexed look the whole time and has some of the worst dialog ever. Again, not sure if it's his fault or scripted that way but his character was paper thin. The supporting cast was fine but boring. The film was slightly edgy but not terrifically suspenseful for me. Bottom line, I just didn't care enough about the characters, the plot or the outcome to fully invest in the movie.

I think casting Jamie Foxx was what killed it for me. Gerry wasn't fabulous but he wasn't horrible other than the accent (which sometimes he got right
- the unevenness was very distracting though). I also expected the plot and story to be fraught with suspense which I didn't find it overly much. Twice,
they started up that roller coaster but somehow got derailed before reaching the top. As I said, it played like almost every other revenge movie I've ever
seen and the many of them were done better because at least it was original then (you know my hang-ups with originality).

That's too bad because the commercials for this movie look pretty good. I probably would have waited until it came out on dvd anyway but thanks for the
review Meli.

I think it will finish second in the box office ratings behind 'Where the Wild Things Are' although 'Couples Retreat' is a pretty strong
contender even for a second weekend. I had tickets for a '...Wild Things...' screening and gave them away. The benefactors of my generosity (a family
with 3 youngsters ages 6,7 and 10) have raved ever since. I loved the book as a child but I'm not foaming at the mouth to see the movie even though it is
getting rave reviews critically and from advanced viewers.

Hubby went to see LAC and said it was "pretty good, but not great". Not my kind of movie, so I won't bother, but he did say rather
"snarkely" that I would've loved the ass shot?? So does the BUTT-LER show some?

Hey, I'm not too proud to say that my interest in him has always been purely on the looks and lust factors. It has waned because I think age has not
treated his face and body that well but the magic of Hollywood can remedy all that.

I guess I'm more easily impressed than you, Meli, but I thought it was a very good film. I thought that Gerry's and Jamie's characters were a
perfect foil for each other, and I thought Gerry's acting was as good as I have seen from him. A lot of people are complaining about the ending, but I
thought that it was perfect. I'll explain why I think so after more people have seen it. Gary Gray said that he was going for a neo-noir feeling for this
movie, and I thought it added to the whole mood of the movie. It was a grim subject, and the coloration of the film was appropriately grim as well. I thought
the supporting cast was very good, but to me the highlight of the movie was the interaction between Nick and Clyde. My favorite scene was the Revenge scene
that you can find on Youtube. Gerry's facial expressions said volumes.

Well, hubby will probably rent it when it comes out, and when it's time for the butt shot, I'll have him call me in 'cause I'm ALWAYS up for a
peek at some tight ass lol!

I guess I'm more easily impressed than you, Meli I'm not a huge movie fan period, no matter who is starring or the topic so that is a huge bias right out of the gate whenever I see any film. Obviously enough people liked it or were at least willing to try it by the fact it placed #2 in the box office totals for the weekend. I'm glad you enjoyed it; you don't have to apologize to me for it! I just didn't, mostly because compared to other movies I've seen in that genre were much better.

I'll watch this when it comes out on one of the movie channels but won't be going to the theater to see it -- that's nothing unusual -- we seldom
go to the movies -- I never even made it to see Harry Potter, which I really did want to see on the big screen. At any
rate, not everything can appeal to everybody -- I've certainly seen movies get raves but when I've seen them I've been disappointed -- and movies
which were soundly panned which I didn't find so bad. This one doesn't strike me as my cup of tea -- but who knows?
