I understand how you feel Jen - try living within 60 miles of all the hoopla! I know that this does not affect you personally, but for this region, all of this inauguration stuff is wonderful for the economy and thus, in some regards, will stimulate at least a small trickle-down effect. As someone who is and has attended inauguration events for several administrations, let me assure you that all of these functions are routine. The difference this time is the media coverage and that is due in part to the 'historic' implications as well as the fact that the majority of the events have been opened up to the public if not completely than as a lottery system. Previously, very little was accessible except through invitation-only.

I also think there are some very unrealistically high ideals and expectations being placed on Mr. Obama and his administration. I think that's natural though when so many people are in such dire straits. Rightly or wrongly, the general consensus is that the Bush administration put the country in a bad spot and therefore something new has got to be better. For the time being, it's a place to pin hope if nothing else.
