I'm not a huge nickname fan either. My parents were of a like mind with Lynn; had they wanted a child called by a shorter name or derivation of their given name, they would've named the child that in the first place. Because my name is long, certain family members and friends would shorten it or call me other names, which my mother would quickly and emphatically correct. I went through a phase in my early teens where I wanted a nickname but that was relatively short-lived. My husband's family has many nicknames for each person and it drives me bats. Where they see it as a form of endearment, I tend to find it disrespectful, particularly when they are asked to refrain from using the names. But, I guess in the grand scheme of things, there are far more important things to quibble over.
