Thanks Lynn - I knew you'd understand all too well about losing the dog suddenly, you've had your share recently too.  We've never had an animal hit before either but I felt very bad for the driver of the truck - he was very kind and clearly upset although it was not his fault at all.  It was still dark outside when all this took place and she literally bolted; he didn't even have a chance to hit his brakes.  At least it was a large truck and pretty much killed her instantly - with not being mobile, I could not have helped her in any way.  We allowed our other dog to see and sniff her before we took her to the vet office and she looked like she was sleeping, not mangled or bloody.  I'm sure it was massive internal injuries or her spine but at least she wasn't smashed up.
