This is what a cop told my son's class to do in a situation like that.
1. Get down and hide under a table or counter if possible.
2. Call 911
3. If you are safe, try to take a picture with your camera phone of the getaway car or write down the license plate number if you can see it.
4. Whatever you do, do NOT challenge or attempt to engage the criminals. Better to try to remember details to help the cops catch them, then to get killed trying to prevent them from leaving.

I remember when I worked as a bank teller many centuries ago, they told us to do whatever the thief wanted as quickly as possible to get him out of the bank and away from customers. Let the cops hunt him down. Whatever money was lost wasn't worth risking someone's life.

Your husband did the right thing, afterall, he'd have really 'pissed you off' if he'd gotten himself killed. Right?
