As a child growing up, we always buried our pets in the fields but right after we moved into our current house, our neighbor's dog was kicked by a cow and died.  He buried the dog behind his garden and the next morning, it was dug back up; we're assuming by foxes or the dogs from the large farm behind us who would roam free at night.  He buried her again, this time wrapping her in plastic and putting her inside a plastic container similar to a trash can.  The grave was dug into again so he ended up disinterring her completely and getting her cremated.  We decided right then and there we couldn't handle burying a dear pet and having it desecrated, even though it's really the natural chain of events for wildlife.
