In my opinion, I married up. As far as social status (or whatever you want to call it), Mark and I weren't much different -- both middle-class though his family was better off than mine -- my father was blue-collar, his white-collar -- and it made a difference in what they made. Still, my family wanted me to get an education and I did -- and, maybe because I knew my father had been limited because of a lack of education, I wanted to marry somebody really smart who had ambition. Mark says that he decided to try for medical school because I encouraged him -- he might have gone into chemistry (which he loves) and had some other kind of job entirely if I had not been supportive. I don't know about that but I was willing to stick with him through it all (though maybe if I'd known the stress -- his and mine -- I might have had a different opinion -- the divorce rate for physicians is high). Anyway, I am where I am and have what I have due to him -- though he says if I hadn't been waiting for him at home, he doesn't know if he could have made it.
