My grandparents were like that, but I suppose it was because they lived most of their lives without a shop around the corner where you can get almost anything anytime. So there was always a few extra bags of flour, rice, pasta, sugar, etc., that were in the end, thrown away because they were spoiled.

My mother is similar with her vegetables. She grows them in her garden and is always sending me boxes of it. I always tell her how I can't eat that much and that it can't last forever in my fridge, but she keeps sending enough for 10 people. One time she put the box on the bus and I went to pick it up. I expected a relatively small box, but she put it in bags and all of the bags in a huge plasma tv box that i couldn't even fit in the elevator so I had to drag it upstairs on the 5th floor!
