There are a few classic movies that I enjoy, but for the most part I find the acting wooden and the actresses affected. I find myself wanting to slap them and say "Knock it off. People don't really talk like that or use those coy, irritating mannerisms." Archness in most situations just looks silly.
And it's hard to find strong women in roles of classic movies, unless they are bitches. I appreciate a strong woman who can hold her own in any situation without resorting to bitchiness. I think that is why I like Lynn's characters so much. |

I can think of two actresses immediately who played strong women: Katherine Hepburn and Lauren Becall. Love watching both.
I also think Myrna Loy's role in The Thin Man series was that of a strong woman. Also, what about Patricia Neal--a little later, but still... Joan

I, too, thought of Lauren Bacall. How about Deborah Kerr? I know there are others as well, I just can't think of them off the bat right now....

Joan Crawford (No More Wire Hangers!!!) typically played strong women and so did Elizabeth Taylor, sometimes, but Bette Davis was the best. "Whatever
Happened to Baby Jane?" freaked me out, lol.
Speaking of classic movies, I just watched the original "Psycho" the other night. The acting was tepid, but man, that Hitchcock knew how to use light and shadow. I've never seen a more beautifully shot black & white film. ~Heff |
