She had only one living relative, a niece several states away. So many saw my friend as cranky and opinionated (and she was!) but that's as far as they got! Boy, did they miss out on a treasure!
Joecile was the first female on-air dj in the United States. Her first time on air was as a 15 yr old intern in a busy broadcasting room on D-Day! The regulars had worn out their voices reporting the news that was coming in by the minute and ultimately put her on air to continue reporting. In later years, she became active in community theater and has entertained countless audiences over the years in many different venues. Very recently, we saw her perform as Aunt Demetria in "On Borrowed Time". If you have never seen that play or the movie, check it out. It's a great story!
Joecile was at my house on Christmas Day this past Christmas....first to arrive and last to leave.... and it was a great day! It's strange how quickly things change. Just a few days later, she was grocery shopping and another shopper found her slumped over her handicap shopping cart. She had a massive stroke that paralyzed the right side of her body and took her voice from her. Thankfully, she did not suffer with this long and is now at rest.
My sister views it as a great opportunity to remind herself and others not to judge based solely on what is first obvious, like an opinionated, cranky attitude. The person underneath that rough shell just might be a beautiful pearl!
Rest in peace Joecile!
