I guess this really hit me hard today because it's Wesley's birthday...
I'd been hearing reports during the last couple of days about somebody drowning at Lake Thurmond (big lake here) but they hadn't been able to locate the body. I hadn't really paid any attention because, well, those things happen, as sad as they are
Well, in this morning's paper, there was an article about the the body being found...and it was a name I recognized. It was the son of former neighbor's (they moved but only a street over). He had somehow been thrown from the boat (I don't know the details) and they think the propeller hit him or something because he was a good swimmer.
Anyway, he was 19. I should say he was probably around 19 because he, as well as three others, were adopted from a Russian orphanage and they didn't even know their exact age or birthday. This couple already had two sons and then adopted these four young boys (three came together, one a few months later). When they first came -- 10 or 12 years ago -- they couldn't speak English and, I remember clearly, that they would just walk into the house without knocking -- you might look up and their was a "Russian kid". Wesley used to play with them quite a bit when they were all young.
Of course, as time went on, you could not tell that they were anything but Americans. This one was in college at Georgia Southern (where my eldest daughter attends). Sadly, it's a life cut short.
